Butter by Asako Yuzuki
I haven't yet finished this book but I wanted to write about it so far.
This book is about a female gourmet chef and serial killer, and a female journalist who is intending to crack the case which is inspired by a true story. It is a Japanese story which has been translated.
I am listening to it. Like I say, I haven't finished it… but, so far, it's a ‘Hmmm’ book for me 😑 - I only just like it, but also it's not bad enough for me to give up on it. 😑🤷🏼♀️
I like the idea of the storyline, and the description of recipes and then the food being made and eaten are enjoyable however, as it's Japanese based, A LOT of the food stuff is Japanese - which isn't a problem, but I'm having to Google it (with an educated guess on the spelling) to know what the character is making/using. The only word I'm not needing to Google is the word Butter - which features heavily! But as much as I'm googling, I'm losing the flow of the story.
I quite like the main character at this stage; she's not done anything wrong - I think there is an element of Japanese culture which comes across through her, and this is interesting and thought-provoking.
There are a few sub-characters who aren't always nice to the main character - which adds to the depth of the story.
It is a long read; approx 17 hours on audio.
I will continue to listen/read as it's not bad enough for me to give up, but it's a slow go.
Have you read Butter as yet, or is it on your tbr pile?
I’ve not read this, but will look for it. I’m reading a Japanese novel too - The Kamogawa Food Detectives, which I’m loving. There are a lot of food descriptions in this too - it’s the whole point of the book, but it is so typically Japanese at it’s core. It’s not about food at all, however, the food descriptions make me hungry everytime I read it!
